The world of 3PL logistics and the supply chain is constantly being pushed forward by innovating technology. Demand increases continue to force 3rd party warehouses to become more efficient and technology driven. One of our non-technological advantages is that we’re an Omaha 3PL warehouse which puts us in an ideal central location within the country. We’re lucky in a way to be where we are, but that doesn’t mean we can ignore the continual upgrading trends that are occurring. Let’s take a look at five trends to watch.
Big Data
Big data is a term used to describe large volumes of data – both structured and unstructured – that floods a business on a daily basis. It’s not the amount that’s important, it’s what organizations do with the data that’s important. Big data can be properly analyzed for insights that lead to better decisions and business moves. Big data matters when it comes to reducing shipping costs, maximizing truck utilization and improving deliveries.
Increased Collaboration
Not too long ago 3PLs, shippers, and everyone else in the supply chain lived in their own isolated worlds, only communicating when necessary. Today that is not possible. 3PLs, shippers, and retailers are actively working together, every day, to improve the quality and speed of every kind of shipment.
In the Cloud
Now, no matter where you’re at, you can access your company’s 3PL. More and more fulfillment companies are migrating to Cloud-based systems. This is making it easier and more efficient to optimize processes online and off.
Last-Mile Problem
Last-mile has been a big issue for shippers and companies using them. It’s the most expensive part of the trip, and the most difficult to control. Increasing pressure from big name companies that have decided to handle their own last-mile deliveries, 3PLs are more incentivized to compete.
Automation
Robots continue to free humans from the mundane tasks of the world. Automation continues to take over more and more important jobs. Robot pickers and small RFID and becoming more valuable throughout warehousing, pick and pack, and even reverse logistic areas.
Technology will continue to accelerate and make the 3PL industry more efficient and cost-effective. We always try our best to keep up with the latest trends and innovations to give our customers the best experience possible.
